Leslie Rae Newton: Body Building and Professional Writing
by Kathryn Martin
Leslie Rae Newton is a Professional Fitness Competitor for
the International Federation of Body Builders. She is also
a business owner, personal trainer and fitness model/spokeswoman.
Newton competes in three to five shows a year, which take
her all over the United States. You might be asking yourself
what in the world bodybuilding has to do with an English degree.
Stepping stones
Newton came to Western Carolina University with the full
intention of attending law school. She decided to major in
English because it was the most common major for law school
acceptance. During Newton’s career at WCU, she wrote
for the newspaper, belonged to the Alpha Chi Omega honors
fraternity, participated in a model United Nations, and served
in student government. Newton also cheered for basketball,
played and worked for the intramural sports department, and
was co-founded the women’s rugby team. “While
playing rugby, I was led to a strength coach who introduced
me to a fitness competitor who planted the seed for competing,”
says Newton in an enthusiastic email interview.
Professional writing and versatility
You may still be wondering how Newton’s present career
coincides with professional writing. She has used professional
writing to create her website, www.leslierae.com,
which illustrates her job and features pictures of her attending
competitions. She also publishes a health and fitness newsletter
distributed in gyms and businesses throughout Phoenix, Arizona.
Newton is a prime example of a person’s career not
necessarily connecting directly with her degree. However,
Newton's English degree constantly comes in handy when she
writes articles and creates company handouts.
Newton says that WCU “taught me the value in creating
the environment I wish to be a part of.” She is a successful
woman putting to full use the benefits of an English Degree.
