Skiing and Snowboarding

When I first came to Western Carolina University I thought there was nothing to do here like most of the freshmen think now. I guess it just takes a little time to find out all the little secrets about fun things to do here in the mountains. Or you could read this article.

Skiing and Snowboarding

The best secret about this area that I have come across in my years here is the discovery of a ski area about 45 minutes away from campus. Most people do not even know this ski area exists. The ski area is called Cataloochee Ski Area, located in Maggie Valley, NC. It’s no Vail or Aspen, but Cataloochee has about 10 trails, 3 lifts, and 100% snowmaking.

When most students want to do something in the great outdoors they will go for a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway or go to East Laport Park in Cullowhee. Did you know that we have a national park within 30 minutes of WCU? The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a great place to go and hike or camp.

When the weather is clear you can go up to the Jackson County Airport and on the Way there is a Great overlook of the campus of WCU.

All these secrets are great ways to pass time or have a good time on a boring day. I hope you take advantage of these secrets.
